Two-Rooms Problem: Interrogation Room
2024-07-28
Multi-device web artworks do not have to keep every device in the same room. Their connections can pass between physically separate rooms, buildings or countries. Nam June Paik’s Good Morning, Mr. Orwell is one reference for thinking across distance.
How could an installation make that distant, real-time relationship felt without simply explaining it? How could a narrative unfold between spaces?
The interrogation room offers a starting structure. A one-way mirror separates being watched from watching. One room is exposed; the other observes and exercises control. The architecture assigns power a direction.
I imagine a participant entering Room A without understanding the complete arrangement. The digitally augmented environment around them is being controlled from Room B. They may begin to suspect that its events are responding to a presence they cannot see.
Later they enter Room B and discover the mechanism—and perhaps occupy the controlling position themselves. What first appeared to be an autonomous environment becomes a relation between people and rooms.
Lacan’s account of the gaze, including the relationship between point of light, screen and subject, is a possible direction for further reading.

Jeanyoon Choi
Jeanyoon Choi (b. 1999) is a Korean computational artist and researcher. He designs and researches multi-device web artworks that reflect the complexity of contemporary socio-technological systems, including AI, algorithmic culture, and economic structures. By interconnecting mobile devices and screens, these artworks create provocatively interactive environments. To develop their conceptual foundations, he draws on art, philosophy, and his scientific background, then uses software engineering and design to translate these ideas into interactive experiences.
He holds a BS in Industrial Engineering from Seoul National University and an MA in Information Experience Design from the Royal College of Art, and is currently a PhD candidate at KAIST's Experience Design Lab (XD Lab). He has also taught Computational Design Practices in the Interaction Design Department at K-Arts (Korea National University of Arts). His work has been exhibited internationally at Ars Electronica, Istanbul Digital Arts Festival, IKLECTIK London, Centre Culturel Coréen, and KAIST Art Museum. His papers have been published in the proceedings of ACM DIS and in the Leonardo journal (MIT Press), and he has served as an academic reviewer for ACM TEI, NeurIPS Creative AI, and Digital Creativity.
